FAW Jiefang Qingdao Auto Factory

Memorabilia (1968 – 2008)

1968: On July 1, Qingdao Second Instrument Factory was restructured and renamed as Qingdao Auto Factory.

1969: In April, the factory launched its first batch of automobiles with the brand of Qingdao 69. It initiates the automobile production of Qingdao City.

1975: The factory stopped manufacturing of Qingdao 69 brand and started to produce QD-140 brand truck.

1977: The factory started to produce the gasoline engine vehicle QD-141 as trial.

1978: The factory began the mass production of the medium-sized diesel truck.

1980: The factory began to produce its agricultural diesel truck QD-145, making the company the first automobile plant of the medium-sized diesel truck in China.

1981: In November, Qingdao Auto Factory and the FAW signed the Agreement on Joint Assembly of Jiefang Diesel Truck, starting the cooperation with the FAW.

1982: In December, Qingdao Auto Factory took a lead in joining Jiefang Automobile Industry Associated Company, a loose consortium with the FAW.

1982-1985: Qingdao Ship Accessories Plant and Qingdao NO.5 Auto Parts Factory were merged into Qingdao Auto Factory.

1985: the factory introduced a 5,100-ton press machine from Germany, the largest one in China at that time.

1989: In January, Qingdao Government and Jiefang Automobile Industry Associated Company signed the contract - Jointly run the First Automobile Works Qingdao Auto Factory. Thereafter, the factory was renamed as First Automobile Works Qingdao Auto Factory.

1990: In November, Qingdao Government and Jiefang Automobile Industry Associated Company signed the contract – Close Cooperation Agreement. Thereinafter, the factory was renamed as China First Automobile Group Qingdao Auto Factory, establishing a close connection with FAW.

1993: In August, Qingdao Government and China FAW Group Corporation signed an agreement on merging Qingdao Auto Factory and Qingdao Tractor General Factory into the FAW group, integrating the asset management. The factory became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the FAW.

1994: In January, the factory realizes the product platform transformation from conventional cabin truck to cabin-over-engine vehicle. On August 27, the first batch of 6-ton diesel vehicles took off the assembly line.

1996: The factory saw its annual output of over 10,000 vehicles for the first time. Moreover, the product was exported for the first time. The factory transferred from small-scale workshop to modern mass production.

2000: The factory established its production base for special purpose vehicle, Shanghai (Pudong) Special Purpose Vehicle Factory of FAW Qingdao.

2002: The factory witnessed its annual output of 70,000 vehicles and sales income of over RMB 10 billion, which is the highest record of this factory.

2003: FAW Jiefang Automotive Company has been established mainly for commercial vehicle in FAW group and Qingdao Auto Factory became one of the main bases. The factory was renamed as FAW Jiefang Qingdao Auto Factory.

The factory built its western production base for complete truck, which is FAW Jiefang Qingdao Factory Chengdu Branch. This subsidiary has the main production facility such as welding, painting and CBU assembly. The annual capacity is 10,000 complete truck per shift.

2006: The factory independently developed and launched its new generation heavy-duty truck, which is New J5P platform.

2008: In March, the factory saw its monthly production turnover of over 10,000 vehicles (export 1000 vehicles), which is the highest record of this factory.
